So How do I begin potty training? What are potty training problems or challenges?
Toilet training usually gets more challenging and turns into a long, frustrating process if you try to start ahead of your child’s abilities. It seems that training your two-year-old is usually the right time to start.
- However, before you take on the challenge, your baby must be able to control their bowel and bladder muscles and their bowel movements are getting regular.
- You also need to make sure that they are capable of understanding and following your simple directions. Also, be sure they are comfortable expressing their need to “go” to the toilet.
- Prepare yourself that it requires a great deal of patience and tolerance of your child’s ‘nasty’ mistakes. We are not trying to scare you off, but you need to keep your eye on the prize because you’ll certainly have your proud moments.
- We also recommend you to use a potty or a safe toilet chair at fixed times of the day so they would perceive it as an integral part of their daily routine. Within half an hour of drinking liquids, get your child on the potty, but never force them to sit for a long period of time.
- You need to make sure your child likes how their potty looks like or what they feel comfortable using the toilet. Motivate them in the beginning, and avoid scolding or shaming them when they fail, or else emotionally they will not be ready to be trained. Agree together on a simple word they can use to express their need to do business like “Pooh Pooh”.
How long does it take to potty train?
Potty Training might be completed within a few days, or it might take longer than a month or two. Because your child perceives his diaper as a natural part of him like any other item of clothing. You are advised to start the training by the end of spring and at the beginning of summer. So your child would be able to wear lighter clothes.
One of the reasons potty training gets more challenging is that parents compare their child’s progress to other children. Also, they are not considering the varying natures of every child. It also won’t be exactly practical to start the training just because relatives started criticizing you even when you know that neither you nor your child is ready.
Potty training in Nursery school
At Little Academy Nursery we work hard to support parents through the training period as their child starts to exhibit signs of readiness. We also make sure to agree on one training method with the parents.
- Teachers remind and send the child to use the toilet a couple of times during the day in the nursery.
- We are thoughtful of the challenge your children are tackling, so we never scold a child if they ever wet themselves.
- If your baby isn’t ready to cooperate with his teachers, we think it is best to stop for a while.
- In the process of ditching the diaper, we advise parents to switch to pull-ups that can be easily pulled up. Also to down like underpants to avoid messy accidents.
